It was the first time I went past level 20 on Hardcore and I was very pleased with performance, though I stopped at level 27. What you want for hardcore is survivability even if that means not maxing your main stat at char creation and level ups. Similarly, when picking enhancements, look for stuff that provides HP, PRR, MRR, dodge, AR, saves etc over what you would normally pick. Even feats are nice such as toughness.
